You’ve already taken the first step. Now it’s time to go the extra mile.

Nursing Magnet JourneyAs a Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals nurse, you have already chosen to be an integral member of one of the premier medical centers in the nation. Jefferson nurses enjoy unparalleled opportunities to practice professional nursing as part of a world-class multidisciplinary team.

Setting the standard for excellence in the delivery of patient care, patient safety, and quality of the healthcare experience, it is no wonder that Thomas Jefferson University Hospital has been rated as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” for many specialties by U.S. News & World Report for 17 years in a row. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital continues to take pride in the quality and variety of healthcare services provided to residents of the Philadelphia metropolitan area, the Delaware Valley, and beyond.

Now, through the Magnet Recognition Program™, you have the unique opportunity to help your team achieve the highest institutional honor awarded for nursing excellence.

Developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the Magnet Recognition Program™ recognizes quality patient care, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice. The program also provides a vehicle for disseminating successful nursing strategies and practices.

What are the Goals of the Magnet™ Program?

The AANC has set the following goals for its certified member organizations:

  • Promoting quality in a setting that supports professional practice
  • Identifying excellence in the delivery of nursing services to patients/residents
  • Disseminating “best practices” in nursing services

Nursing Magnet JourneyWhat are the Forces of Magnetism?

Encompassing 14 qualitative factors or “Forces of Magnetism,” these criteria are based upon quality indicators and standards of nursing practice as defined in the American Nurses Association’s Scope and Standards for Nursing (2004).

  • Forces 1 through 4 address organizational structure
  • Forces 5 through 8 address quality of nursing.
  • Forces 9 through 14 address professional environment.

Magnet™-designated facilities that implement the full expression of “Forces” exhibit exceptional, system-wide practices in a professional environment and are guided by innovative nursing leadership that is attuned to developing excellence in each team member. Magnet status helps to elevate the performance and prestige of the entire institution.

As an academic medical center, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals provide an excellent clinical setting for our patients and as an exceptional learning environment for Jefferson students and residents. Becoming a Nursing Magnet™-designated facility fortifies Jefferson’s standards for excellence in the delivery of patient care, patient safety, and quality of the healthcare experience.
