How are the nursing units organized at Methodist?
Methodist Hospital is a community hospital that serves the patient by considering the needs of the individual in relationship to his/her individual level of development. Clinical services include med/surg, critical care, perioperative, emergency care and varied outpatient services, such as its Center for Radiologic Oncology, and programs in wound care, diabetic care, incontinence management, and pain management.

Perioperative Services:

  • Seven Operating Rooms, which provide surgical intervention for a variety of specialties for adults.
  • An Ambulatory Procedure/Same Day Admission Unit where pre- and post-operative care is provided to ambulatory patients undergoing same-day short procedures.
  • Endoscopy Suite (2 suites).
  • Post-Anesthesia Care Unit.

Critical Care Services:

  • Pulmonary Care Services, providing respiratory care and pulmonary function testing as well as bronchoscopies.
  • Emergency Department, which has an annual visitation of 25,000 patients.
  • Two Intermediate Cardiac Care Units, comprising a total of 57 beds with continuous telemetry capability.
  • A 9-bed Critical Care Unit for acute cardiac conditions and emergencies along with an 11-bed Intensive Care Unit for complicated postoperative care and persons with conditions that affect multiple body systems, including hemodialysis.

Medical/Surgical:

  • A 47-bed Med/Surg unit that cares for varied surgical and medical conditions.
  • An 8-bed Ortho-Surgical Unit specializing in shoulders and knees.

What kind of library privileges do Methodist nurses have?
As a Methodist nurse, you have full access to the Methodist Nursing Library. The Library is a major resource for the Methodist community.

What kind of resources does the library have?
The Library has access to MEDLINE, MICROMEDEX, and other online database systems. There are a large number of nursing journals. Inter-library loan is available, as are copy machines.

How safe is it working around Methodist?
The Methodist community is monitored by its own security force that uses closed circuit television cameras, frequent rounds, consistent ID checks and statistical analysis of any reports to maintain the highest quality security. In addition, employees who work late at night can request a security escort.

The Security department also maintains close relationships with the local Police District. Methodist’s Director of Security is a former police officer.

What is there to do in South Philadelphia?
The Methodist Hospital Division, TJUH is located in South Philadelphia, one of the City’s more colorful neighborhoods, made popular by the movie Rocky. Methodist Hospital enjoys a close bond with several of the Mummers’ clubs, who often provide entertainment for hospital patients and visitors. The Hospital is also near the famous Italian Market as well as several places where you can grab a famous Philly cheesesteak.

Methodist Hospital is just down the street from Citizens Bank Park, Lincoln Financial Field, the First Union Center, and the Avenue of the Arts. We are also close by several major movie complexes, including the popular United Artists Complex on Columbus Boulevard. (Columbus Boulevard borders Philadelphia's Delaware River waterfront, where you can find nightlife, concerts, festivals and winter ice-skating.)

There are plenty of stores and restaurants in the neighborhood surrounding Methodist Hospital, in particular the nearby Passyunk Avenue strip, located just a few blocks from the Hospital.

What is the relationship between Methodist Hospital and Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals? What is their relationship to Jefferson Health System?
Established in 1892, Methodist Hospital has been an integral part of the South Philadelphia community. In the 1990s, Methodist began partnering with Jefferson Hospital and more recently, that partnership was formalized when Methodist Hospital became wholly owned by, and a division of, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals.

Now, Methodist patients have greater access to Jefferson's patient care programs and services while still remaining “in the neighborhood.” The Methodist Hospital Division offers a full range of clinical services, including an emergency department, radiology, surgery center and a birth center as well as programs in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, gastroenterology, pulmonary medicine, among others.

In addition to Methodist, TJUHs services are delivered at other locations – in Center City Philadelphia, at the Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience (9th & Walnut Streets, in Center City Philadelphia) and at Jefferson HealthCARE – Voorhees, an outpatient facility in New Jersey. Together, the Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals have 941 acute care patient beds, 186 subacute and long-term care beds, and major programs for a wide range of clinical specialties.
