Perioperative Services
Jefferson’s perioperative services at Main Campus are comprised of 34 Operating Rooms, two PACUs and Short Procedure Unit/Same Day Surgery Unit.
Operating Room
The Operating Room nurses assist in the following types of surgery: Orthopedics, ENT, Maxillofacial, Spine, Neuro, Hand, Cardiac, Vascular, Thoracic, Transplant, Urology, Gynecology, Plastics, and General.
Jefferson offers a comprehensive RN Orientation Program, which partners with the Jefferson School of Nursing and is a 7-week Perioperative course and extensive 6-month rotation in all specialties in both scrub and circulating roles.
Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) staff, comprised of highly-skilled registered nurses proficient in critical care nursing are responsible for providing efficient, effective quality care to pre-operative patients within the Holding Areas and post-operative patients within the various PACU locations. This care includes:
- Assessing readiness for surgery
- Monitoring vital signs (oxygen saturation, temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and respiration)
- Treating symptoms of post-operative nausea and vomiting
- Managing post-operative pain
SPU/SDA/JAU
The SPU/SDA/JAU unit provides care for surgical and non-surgical patient populations undergoing a procedure on the day they arrive to Jefferson. The staff provides comprehensive care that includes assessment, preparation and education to patients pre-operatively and post-operatively. The surgical patient population types that we serve include General Surgery, Cardiothoracic, ENT, Urology, Dental, Neurology, Orthopedic, and Gynecology. The non-surgical procedures include Cardiac Catheterizations, CVIR, Endoscopic Procedures, Infusions, Transfusions, Bronchoscopies, and Biopsies.
Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience (JHN) Operation Room (OR)
The Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience (JHN) Operating Room (OR) is a 10-suite unit staffed to meet the needs of surgical patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The surgical specialties at JHN include neurosurgery, ophthalmology, chronic pain management, otolaryngology, and plastic surgery.
JHN PACU/SDA/SPU/DSU
Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience (JHN) is Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals’ (TJUH) dedicated hospital for neuroscience – the only such hospital in the region.
The PACU/SDA/DSU/SPU is staffed 24/7 by an experienced and dedicated team of registered nurses proficient in critical care nursing who are responsible for providing efficient, effective quality care to pre-operative patients within the Holding Areas and post-operative patients within the various PACU/SPU locations.
On any given day the units may see surgery such as:
- Microsurgery-Reconstructive surgery on small vessels
- Endovascular embolization techniques
- Stereotactic radiosurgery-Application of radiation, via either Shaped Beam Surgery or the Linear Accelerator (LINAC)-based X-Knife, precisely targeted to an AVM
- Carotid endarterectomys
- Balloon angioplasty
- Plastic surgery
- ENT
- Pain Service – management of chronic pain
- Ophthalmology
Jefferson Surgical Center (JSC)
Jefferson Surgical Center has been servicing the Philadelphia and surrounding communities since 1985. An average of 350 consumers utilize the facility each month, approximately 3,900 – 4,300 per year. Hours of operation are 7:00 a.m - 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. JSC is a hospital-based outpatient surgical center offering services including gynecological and breast procedures, orthopedic foot and ankle surgeries, general surgery and laparoscopic cases, as well as ENT and endoscopies. The facility is comprised of a pre-operative holding/admission area, 4 fully functioning operating rooms and a 2 phase recovery room/discharge lounge.
Patient Testing Center (PTC)
The Patient Testing Center (PTC) at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals (TJUH) provides quality care to patients to complete preadmission testing prior to surgery and/or procedures. This process is done in an efficient and timely manner by registration, unit clerks, medical technicians, nurse practitioners and anesthesiologists. Patients who present to PTC in preparation for the surgery have an H & P examination performed by a nurse practitioner, an anesthesia evaluation, lab work, and/or an EKG.
