Medical/Surgical Services

Medical/Surgical Services include Rehab, Orthopedics, Transplant, Cardiology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Surgery, Medicine, and Neurology.

Orthopedics

The Orthopedic unit has 70 beds located on three units. Nursing care and treatment is devoted to a realm of patients with orthopedic injuries, joint replacements, and/or other orthopedic surgical interventions. The patient population ranges from pediatric to the geriatric patient and considers the needs for the individual in relationship of their level of development. The types of patients served include the orthopedic, trauma, neurosurgery, physical rehabilitation and spinal cord injury patient.

Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery

This med/surg unit is the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgical sub-specialty unit. The nurses are very knowledgeable and competent with trach and laryngectomy tubes, and are very willing to share this expertise with other units. But, airway management is only a part of their talents. The staff manages a vast array of patients with neurological, neurosurgical, and trauma-related injuries. Their specialized training also attracts admissions for the Ketogenic Diet.

The Epilepsy Care Unit (ECU)

The Epilepsy Care Unit (ECU) is an 8-bed unit, where patients are slowly decreased on their antiepileptic medications, which causes them to seize. These seizures are captured on a 24-hour EEG and video. This is a frightening experience and requires a caring and astute staff to understand their fears as well as manage their physical endangerments.

GYN Surgery and General Medicine

This 30 bed medical, surgical oncology unit provides specialized care required by patients with gynecologic, gynecologic-oncology, and gynecologic-urology surgeries. The unit provides care for breast, and general surgeries as well as for general medicine and medical oncology diagnoses.

General Surgery/Trauma

This 25-bed general surgery, trauma unit provides specialized care required by patients with colorectal/gastrointestinal surgery, vascular surgery, general surgery, breast surgery trauma and radiation implant and/or drink therapy. It provides care to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. It strives to provide compassionate, efficient, affordable quality health care while supporting the organization’s mission towards research and education.

Urology Transplant and Renal

This 23-bed medical/surgical unit specializes in Urology and Transplant surgeries.

Medical Oncology

This 34-bed medical oncology unit provides specialized care required by patients with medical and/or oncology diagnoses.

Bodine Infusion Center

Bodine Infusion Unit is an outpatient area with 18 treatment spaces. The unit provides specialized infusions and care required by patients with medical and/or oncology, hematology and neurology diagnoses.

Jefferson Infusion Center (JIC)

The Jefferson Infusion Center (JIC) is a 30-bay outpatient setting and was established to provide comprehensive care to oncology patients. Patients are able to receive a variety of therapies. In addition, the unit participates in multiple clinical trials.

Radiation Oncology Center

Hours of operation are from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. for treatment of inpatients and 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for outpatient therapy. The Radiation Oncology Center performs approximately 2,000 consultations per year, with treatment delivery to approximately 1,250 patients each year.

The Bodine Center has a multidisciplinary clinic daily including: uveal melanoma, CNS/brain, lung, and genito-urinary discussions. The multidisciplinary conferences are attended by the various specialties yielding the best possible plans of care for patients.

General Medicine

There are two medical units that provide specialized care required by patients with medical diagnoses.

Rehab

This 23-bed acute Rehabilitation Unit provides specialized rehabilitation care required by patients with orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, degenerative neuromuscular diseases, spinal cord injury, multi-system dependent deconditioning, rehab oncology, trauma, and stroke.

General Surgical

This 18-bed, General Medical-Surgical unit consists of single rooms; including two suites. Our patient population includes those who have had abdominal, colorectal, vascular, or breast surgery. Surgical patients often have needs that involve care of complex wounds, TPN, tube feedings, ostomies and drainage catheters.

Jefferson Hospital for Neurosciences (JHN) Wills Eye Emergency Department and Inpatient Ophthalmology Unit

Jefferson Hospital for Neurosciences (JHN)/Wills Eye Emergency Department is the region’s only emergency eye center and provides episodic care on a 24-hour basis. The unit has expertise in the assessment and care of all types of ocular emergencies, including mechanical and chemical trauma, emergent conditions of the retina and cornea, glaucoma, and conditions related to acute vision loss.

In this inpatient setting comprehensive care is provided to patients admitted from the ED. This patient population includes individuals with acute or chronic disorders of the retina and cornea as well as patients with glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmologic diseases and those requiring oculo-plastics interventions. The nurses are cross-trained to work in either department.
