Graduate Nurses
Graduate nurses find Jefferson an excellent place to begin a career. You will receive a unit-based orientation under the guidance of a clinical nurse specialist, available to educate, precept and mentor the professional staff. Orientation is based on clinical practice environment to include perioperative, med/surg and critical care. We require new graduates to have a Pennsylvania Registered Nurse License prior to starting.
Graduate Nurse Residency Program
New graduate nurses joining Jefferson are enrolled in the Graduate Nurse Residency Program. A collaborative endeavor of Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals and the Jefferson School of Nursing, the program is designed for graduates of accredited baccalaureate nursing programs and master’s level nurses entering into practice within six months of graduation. The innovative one-year program helps new nurses develop the necessary skills to transition into their first professional role.
Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals’ nursing philosophy is based on Benner’s theoretical framework of novice to expert. Graduate nurses progress from advanced beginners to competent practitioners through participation in bimonthly seminars and activities focused on learning and work experiences. Seminar topics concentrate on issues that are important to the development of the graduate nurse as a productive member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
Experienced nurses facilitate the program through interactive sessions and case scenarios with special emphasis in the areas of:

- Communication/Delegation Skills
- Critical-Thinking Skills
- Leadership Abilities
- Professional Career Development
- Research-Based Practice
In conjunction with the resident’s assigned preceptor, facilitators and the program coordinator, the Graduate Nurse Residency Program supports and enhances the centralized and unit-specific orientation process.
